What is Sedum Japonica

Sedum japonicum ‘Tokyo Sun’, commonly known as Tokyo Sun Stonecrop, is a semi-evergreen succulent that is known for its bright yellow, gold foliage and yellow flowers that appear in summer. It forms a mat-like ground cover and can grow up to 12 inches wide and 3 inches tall. This variety is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11 and can tolerate cold down to about 10°F (zone 8). However, it is not cold-hardy below these temperatures and should be brought indoors during winter months if the temperature gets colder than 10°F (-12.2°C).

For optimal growth, Tokyo Sun Sedum prefers full sun but is sensitive to extreme heat. It is best grown in well-drained and gritty soil and is drought-tolerant once established. The ideal temperature range for this plant is 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), and it falls under the hardiness zones 8 to 10. There is some variation in the reported hardiness zones, with another source indicating that it can withstand temperatures as low as -5 °F, which would place it in zone 6b.

In the United States, gardeners living within USDA zones 6b through 11 have the potential to grow Tokyo Sun Sedum outdoors, with the caveat that in zones lower than 9, they may need to take precautions against freezing temperatures by bringing the plants indoors during colder months. It’s an easy-care plant that requires watering only after the soil has completely dried, using the “soak and dry” method, and it should be watered about once every two weeks
